Shadowscapes: Layering, Transparency, and Color

Meeting / Lecture

Cindy Freeman Lecture -
                     Shadowscapes: Layering, Transparency, and Color

Shadowscape quilts are inspired by images of people with their shadows in any given landscape. They are also constructed using reflection symmetry and they are often constructed in panels which can be arranged in a variety of patterns.

 . . . . . . . . from Cindy's website:

Cindy has a lifelong obsession with fiber. A childhood filled with sewing and needle arts and careers as an Industrial Designer and a Fashion Designer led to a convergence in the art quilt medium in the early 1990's. Her work has always reflected her fascination with human body forms, their construction, and function as they interact with architectural and geometric shapes, grids, and patterns. Cindy's current work continues to explore the possibilities of fiber in art.

The art is linked by textile references and quilt making traditions and fuses multiple disciplines from drawing to intricate needlework. Her internationally exhibited work can be found in gallery exhibitions, private collections and locally in the Hospital of the University of PA, Infectious Disease Clinic and the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House.

Shadowscapes: Layering, Transparency, and Color
                                                           Cindy Friedman

You will produce a cloth portrait from a photograph of your choosing and along the way you will learn the process Cindy has developed and refined over the last 8 years in the making of her shadowscape quilts.
Her process consists of multiple steps and begins with preparing a machine quilted background surface, creating a drawing from the photograph which is transferred onto silk organza, cutting out and fusing the drawn image onto the background, and finally, machine stitching the drawn lines to give the drawn image dimension and texture.
