Inspiration: Where does it come from?
Judy Coates Perez

Judy is an international award-winning mixed media textile artist, who travels globally to teach painting and mixed media techniques on fabric and lecture about her creative process. She received her BFA in graphic design from the Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design but found her true passion when she began working with textiles.

One part gypsy and two parts visual alchemist, she travels to new places, opening up new realms of possibilities for her students by revealing endless ways to combine paint, paper and metal with fabric and the sources of inspiration we all too often overlook in our immediate worlds.

Judy has written numerous articles for Quilting Arts and Cloth Paper Scissors magazines, has three instructional DVDs by Interweave, and has been a frequent guest on Quilting Arts TV.

Blessings in the Wind: Making mixed media prayer flags

Traditionally, prayer flags are used to promote peace, strength, well-being and wisdom, and when blown by the wind, spread good will and compassion. Make unique prayer flags by painting colorful fabrics with acrylic inks, then print each one with thermofax screens, stamps and incorporate words and images using Judy’s printed abaca tissue papers.
